Unfortunately, the law can’t help you, and calling the police might not give you the result that you want. Moreover, calling the police on your neighbors will only strain your relationship with them.
Before you do anything else, here are some things you need to know if you want to keep your neighbor from parking in front of your house.
You Can’t Put a No-Parking Sign.
Putting a no-parking sign might be very tempting, but it is not a solution, not to mention illegal. The street in front of your house is not yours to keep, so everyone can park there legally even if they are blocking your driveway.
If you put up that sign, you are the one breaking the law. So, hold your horses. Please don’t put a No-Parking sign, and let’s think of another way.
Try to Ask Nicely
Before you call the authorities to put your neighbors in their place, make sure you try to have a chat with them first. Maybe they park in front of your house simply because they think it is a public area and you won’t mind.
That’s what I do when I find my neighbors parking in front of my house. If you politely tell them what you feel, they probably will have a change of heart.
Of course, this trick doesn’t always work when you have an entitled neighbor. But being nice should always be your priority. If you can’t meet them, you also can leave a note in their car.
Get There before They Do
Some people are just so stubborn and don’t care about other people. If asking politely doesn’t work, then you need to claim your spot before they do.
Try to go home before your neighbor does for a couple of weeks. When they see that you often park in front of your house, they will sense that the certain area in front of your home is reserved for you. If they have some decency, they will find another place to park.
Get Resident-Only Parking Permit
Having neighbors that love to party and invite their friends to come to their house is one of the most annoying things on earth, especially if the guests park their car anywhere they like.
If this is the case, you can request a resident-only parking permit from the local authority. Different states may have different rules regarding this parking permit, so make sure you check the regulations in your area.
There is nothing you can do when your neighbors park their car in a public area—even if it is in front of your house.
They don’t do anything illegal, so make sure you pay attention to the law and regulations when you try to make them move.
