Rethinking Home: The Heart of a Roman Apartment

For many, home is a sanctuary—a place where memories are formed and comfort is found. This sentiment rings particularly true for the owners of a 110-square-meter apartment in Rome, who wanted to create a space reflective of their travels and personal history. After years on the move, they turned to Marco Rulli, cofounder of 02A Studio, to shape their vision of what a true home could be. Rulli explains their concept: “We envisioned the apartment as a treasure box— a space that not only serves as a refuge but also holds the essence of their roots and experiences.” The result is a modern dwelling that feels vibrant and layered, decorated with thoughtful, bespoke art pieces that enrich the overall ambiance. Enclosure appears elegantly crafted throughout the space. Rooms are cleverly designed to connect without the overuse of doors, establishing a feeling of intimacy while promoting a seamless flow from one area to another. This layout strikes a skilled balance, offering the residents both a cocooned comfort and a sense of grounding.

Artistic Touches and Functional Design

A once lackluster entrance has dramatically transformed into an inviting area, highlighted by a stunning mural created by artist Chiara Cataldi. The bright yellow paint, adorned with botanical imagery, hints at the natural beauty surrounding the couple, reflecting their heartfelt connection to both home and the world outside. Rulli elaborates on the apartment’s flooring, noting, “We preserved the existing solid timber parquet in the kitchen and bedroom but replaced it elsewhere. The new flooring is laid in a staggered pattern, designed to complement the apartment’s curves while avoiding monotony.” This thoughtful approach to layout and materials gives every space its unique identity while harmonizing with the overall aesthetic.

Zone Separation without Sacrifice

Originally conceived as a single, expansive room, the apartment posed challenges in carving functional zones without disrupting the overall flow. Rulli and his team focused on creating distinct areas, especially in the kitchen. Dominated by a striking Klein blue pantry wall and complemented by a Jakarta Pink marble island, the kitchen serves multiple purposes—from cooking to casual dining. Matilde Masi, also of 02A Studio, shares that the island's design is reminiscent of satellite imagery, emphasizing themes of travel and exploration found throughout the apartment. Preserving the original ceiling moldings enhanced the kitchen’s character, which incorporates a terracotta ceiling to draw attention to its historical features. This interplay of old and new not only maintains the apartment's charm but also serves a more substantial narrative that intertwines the owners' travels and identity into their living space.

Embracing Continuity and Personal History

On the dining room's compact scale, the designers chose a round table to echo the room’s curves, maximizing the space's potential. A vividly colored light fixture from Gropius Lamp infuses the small area with energy, creating a dynamic atmosphere perfect for both intimate gatherings and casual meals. Rather than avoid the apartment's inherent curvatures, the architects embraced them. Rulli likens the passageway between the living and dining areas to a natural isthmus, resulting in a fluid transition that enhances the home’s overall continuity. With bespoke joinery mirroring these organic forms, every detail feels deliberate, reflecting the owners’ desires while honoring the apartment's architectural language. Even discreet elements, like the guest bedroom concealed by plush curtains, reveal thoughtful design. When the curtains are drawn back, the space opens up, expanding the living area while retaining its multifaceted purpose—proof that limitations can lead to creative solutions.

A Collectively Curated Home

Every corner of the apartment reflects a story, from the vibrant murals to the carefully chosen furniture, much of which the owners have gathered during their travels. “Our goal was to create a dialogue between various styles and objects, allowing the owners’ journeys to resonate through their surroundings,” Rulli explains. In the busy heart of this home, the living room is open and welcoming, almost like an internal piazza. It’s arranged around a central sofa, encouraging easy movement and conversations. The ceilings, adorned with artwork from the previous owner, further enhance the grand atmosphere, while a bespoke mirrored coffee table allows the mural's splendor to captivate attention. In this thoughtfully designed space, each detail—not merely functional, but expressive—invites residents and guests alike to connect with both the memories held within and the adventures yet to come. The apartment becomes more than just a living space; it evolves into a deeply personal narrative, weaving together aspects of travel, nostalgia, and the comforting embrace of home.
